2008 Zamjahn Basement Transformation

This was an unfinished basement in a 1 year old home. It had approximately 1500 square feet with one egress window and rough plumbing for a bath. The homeowners had very specific ideas of what they wanted in the basement. They needed it to multifunction as a home theater, wet bar – entertaining area, wine cellar, ¾ bathroom, billiards room, home office, playroom, guest room and still have storage space. That was a lot to get into the space because the homeowners wanted to leave the existing egress window and rough plumbing where it was. (To save costs) This predetermined where the bathroom & guest room could go. The billiards room required a specific size to accommodate adequate room to play, and they wanted to be able to close the doors of the playroom and office when they had company, so it couldn’t be part of the open space. Our on staff designer compiled all the measurements and drew plans until she worked everything in. We made it not only work, but astatically it looks beautiful and functions just as they wanted it to! The guest room, office and play room are all separate and we gave them to ability to grow in the home as their children do. When they no longer require the playroom it will become a home gym. It is already wired for cable and TV in an upper corner and speakers throughout. The theater room, bar and entertaining area all merged into one large space that is completely wired with in ceiling speakers for surround sound controlled by a main receiver. There is another receiver in the playroom which controls the music over the billiards area, so there can be someone watching a movie at one end and another member of the family playing pool listening to their favorite music at the other. The sump pump posed a little problem for us. It happened to be in the exact corner where the homeowner wanted his audio/video components. We had a carpenter construct a custom built-in above the sump pump where each shelf is removable for access to the pump, should it ever become necessary. There were two FHA posts left exposed in the space so we used them as architectural elements and put columns around them to make them part of the space. They look like we added them for visual interest rather than needing to work around them.
